Description
This is a used Raytheon PalmIR 250 Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging Camera, this unit is also known as the "Thermal Eye 250". These allow you to see "heat" in darkness and low-light conditions. Great for hunting, camping, rescue, surveillance, construction, energy monitoring and much more. This is the newerDigital
model which supercedes the original analog series models and has a bunch of more features. If you research these on the internet, you will see they are still highly-regarded as the most dependable IR imager out there due to the BST sensor technology used. The unit has a built-in eyepiece display, a video output jack and several buttons for viewing/changing settings. One person was kind enough to let me know that this unit includes the
Long Range 75mm
lens which according to the manufacturer gives you an estimated human detection range of 3000-feet! This unit was retired from a government agency and the government still has a very large fleet of these still in use today. They are still supportable as well, I spoke to a company that still supplies parts and services for them should you need to change something.
Unit is in good condition with scuffs, marks and wear from use and storage. A hard carrying case is included, the interior foam is still in good shape and not flaking much.
The unit powers on perfectly. Allow the unit 25-30 seconds at startup before seeing images, this is the normal warm up routine. There is an "Auto" and "Manual" mode, in manual mode there are features available to fine-tune the view. There also are brightness controls, sharpness, level and gain settings as well, each setting properly adjusts the image quality as expected. All buttons on the unit function properly. I connected the unit to an external monitor (
monitor not included
) to capture some shots of the view as trying to get a camera to focus on the eye-piece is challenging. The unit has a standard nut on the bottom so it can be fixed/mounted on a tripod.
The operation of this unit is amazing. The optics are in excellent shape, you will easily see "heat" generated from appliances, people, heaters, fire, pipes, electronics, etc. It was tested and in perfect operating condition, all pictures attached to this listing were generated from this unit. In the picture of a room you can see where the studs are located in the walls (dark vertical lines). When aiming at transformers you can easily see which ones are generating the most heat and human detection is simple.
Please note that this unit comes three rechargeable batteries. One battery is used, two were purchased recently. For the new batteries that I purchased, I had to grind down the edges on them as they were a tad too long for the camera body. During my testing the batteries took and held a charge and were able to operate the unit without any external power. It uses DR11 batteries that are commonly used in older video cameras. I marked the batteries on the back with a label (UP) to show you the orientation of the battery, if you stick the battery in upside-down it will not power on because the contacts don't line up.
Monitor pictured is not included, it is depicted to show that the unit is properly passing video signals through the side video port.
