-Emergency blankets are incredibly useful. These can reflect up to 90% of body heat back to the user. I have slept under one of these covered with some leaves in rainy upper 30 degree weather and was able to keep warm enough to sleep most of the night in regular clothes. Each blanket weighs only 1.8oz. These measure 5 in x 3 1/4 in x 1/2 in folded (can be even smaller if compressed) and 51 in x 82 in unfolded. I would recommend keeping at least one of these in every survival kit! Here are just a few of the many uses for a survival blanket:
Protects from cold, wind and rain. These are waterproof.
Shields from extreme heat and sun exposure.
Works well as a water collector.
Can be used as a solar oven.
Makes a good sun shade.
Can be cut into a bandana to protect the head from sun, prevent heat loss, and protect the eyes against snow blindness (see-through, works just like sunglasses and can be layered for desired darkening) .
Makes an excellent signalling device like a signal mirror with thousands of angles.
Can be used to carry water.
Excellent for scaring away bears and other predators when unfolded and shaken vigorously.
Can be made into a sleeping bag with tape and leaves or plant down such as cattail for insulation.
When sitting between an emergency blanket and a fire it makes a great reflector to keep you warm on all sides.
