1.8 John Neptune large hole shakuhachi.Rare 1.8 large hole Shakuhachi made by John Neptune. 21.5 inches long (55cm). Tuned in D. Weight 442g. (14.5 oz) Wide bore Madake bamboo with a pronounced curve and bold natural markings. Rattan covered tight fitting steel joint. Tozan style utaguchi (buffalo horn)inset blowing edge with wide decorative silver edge. Jiari (traditional plaster) buildup inside with very smooth urushi (Japanese laquer). Two hanko (stamp). Refined high polish finish with binding near mouthpiece. Wide bell at root end. Excellent condition.
John Neptune, one of the most renowned players in America, developed very large hole Shakuhachis to produce the loud volume needed to blend with modern instruments. They retain the complex sound of traditional flutes with subtle overtones while retaining wide dynamic range. Powerful players will get the most out of a Neptune flute, but those with smaller hands should consider a more traditional instrument. Well suited to large halls and dynamic ensembles.
